In the late 1980s, some logicians, computer scientists and AI experts in Sun Yat-sen  University began the interdisciplinary studies in logic, cognition and artificial intelligence. Professor Shier Ju is among the pioneers. He and his group worked on the project such as "Knowledge Representation and Reasoning" in 863 High-Tech Program and "Cognitive Science" in Climbing S&T Heights Plan. Since the early 1990s, they have been pursuing the implementation of philosophical logic and automated reasoning. In 1998 the Institute of Logic and Cognition (ILC) of Sun Yat-sen University was founded and began to offer a doctoral program in logic. In 2000, ILC was ranked as the key research institute of humanities and social sciences in Universities by the Chinese Ministry of Education. In 2001, the logical science at ILC becomes the only key discipline in the domestic field of logic. ILC is equipped with the best teaching staff and facilities in China for the academic research in this field.
ILC has hosted a research group with special interests in: cognition, mathematical logic, logic of philosophy, philosophy of logic, informal logic, logic of artificial intelligence and language, Uncertain Reasoning and Decision.
Now, ILC has established close academic relationship with many universities and research institutes both at home and abroad. 
Since the year 2000, nearly 20 students received master's degree, and 10 students their Ph.D. degree. Now there are 28 Ph.D. students and 26 Master's students in ILC. We encourage the students to participate in the projects in ILC and hope they will gain abundant accomplishments.
