In many situations that involve human reasoning, what can rationally be inferred is based on argument and counter-argument. That is, questions of what to believe or what to do can be settled by looking what can be reasonably defended using rational discussion. The field of formal argumentation theory aims to model the construction and evaluation of arguments, and make connections between formal models of reasoning and human forms of reasoning. In the current presentation, we provide a brief overview of some of the main approaches in the field.
